Yoga Great Passes Away. Sri K Pattabhi Jois

The man who brought Ashtanga Yoga to the world, and was indirectly responsible for passing it on to me (and many, many others) passed away today. (see note below) Back in the early 90’s I was in a workshop with him. Whew! It was a tough class but, what a learning experience. The energy in that room was something else! Here is my personal lineage (for anyone that may be interested) Pattabhi Jois taught Norman Allen. Norman Allen taught Beryl Bender. Beryl Bender taught Thom Birch (as Pattabhi Jois taught them both too). Beryl and Thom both taught me. Me? I guess I might have passed it on to people that I taught over an extended period of time. This is a practice that takes a lot of time and effort to learn to then teach it to someone else.

Pattabhi Jois supposedly had a very energetic practice when he was young. He and Mr. Iyengar were both students of the legendary teacher Sri Tirumala Krishnamacharya who died in 1989 at the age of 100. So the tradition is passed on. It is a sad day, but made easier by knowing that the teachings and memories continue to be passed on.
